Chinese Scientists Make Breakthrough in Drip Irrigation

The production of infilled pipe used for drip irrigation developed by Chinese scientists has been approved in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, after passing tests conducted by the province.

Drip irrigation is an efficient and water-saving technology, however the devices used in China are mainly provided by Israel and the US. Experts said that this achievement will end this situation.

Tests have demonstrated that the special pipes, at a cost half that of imported products, can save water up to 80 percent, compared with traditional irrigation methods. They are also suitable for the soil in northwestern China, and will be welcomed by the local farmers.

China's water share per capita is only 25 percent of the world average, and the country's northwestern region is the most seriously water-deficient.

The ministries of Science and Technology and Water Resources have decided to spread the use of these pipes as a way of saving water without spoiling agricultural irrigation.
