MONTEVIDEO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- There is great potential for China-Uruguay economic cooperation as well as cultural and political exchanges, Uruguayan top lawmaker said.
"For a country like Uruguay, it is very important to strengthen trade ties with an economic power like China, the most populous country in the world," German Cardoso, president of the Chamber of Deputies, told Xinhua Friday.
The South American country has a lot to offer in regard to economic cooperation with China, given its advantageous geographic location featuring long shared borders with Brazil and Argentina and Atlantic coast, said Cardoso.
Uruguay will inevitably "embark on the road towards transforming its infrastructure" including ports, railways, and other elements of the logistics networks while China has quite a competitive edge in this regard, he said.
Uruguay's thriving agricultural output also offers great opportunity for bilateral trade, the lawmaker added.H On the political front, Cardoso said inter-parliamentary exchanges between the two countries have been frequent. China has invited several Uruguayan parliamentary delegations to visit its National People's Congress (NPC), while Uruguay's Congress has also hosted many Chinese lawmakers. The NPC has also invited members of Uruguay's political parties to visit China.
"That's very good" for politicians on both sides to enhance mutual understanding, Cardoso said.
He also reviewed a recent trip to China by Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, during which Mujica and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to further bilateral cooperation in various fields.
