CPC chief offers condolences over Chavez's death

BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Communist Party of China (CPC) chief Xi Jinping on Wednesday sent a message of condolences to Venezuelan acting President Nicolas Maduro over the death of President Hugo Chavez.

Xi, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, offered sincere condolences to Maduro, the Venezuelan government and people and Chavez's relatives.

Chavez was a great statesman and outstanding leader of Venezuela, who led the Venezuelan government and people to huge achievements in the great cause of national construction and won support and respect from the people, Xi said in his message.

Calling Chavez a great friend of the Chinese people, Xi said Chavez made remarkable contribution to pushing forward the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.

The CPC and the Chinese government and people attach great importance to developing relations with Venezuela, Xi said, adding that China will work with Venezuela to further enhance and deepen the bilateral cooperation so as to lift the bilateral strategic partnership to higher levels.

Chavez died of cancer in a military hospital in Caracas on Tuesday.
