Explosion hits Shanghai chemical plant, casualties unknown

SHANGHAI, June 24 (Xinhua) -- An explosion happened in a chemical plant on Monday afternoon in east China's Shanghai Municipality, rescuers said, not knowing if there are any casualties.

As of 3:30 p.m., a fire at the plant has been extinguished after the blast at an industrial zone in the Jinshan district of Shanghai, according to rescuers.

The explosion happened at about 2:15 p.m..

Rescue efforts and investigations are underway.

The latest explosion followed just one day after an explosion occurred at a chemical plant in the city's Pudong District at midday Sunday.
