Boy, 12, drowned by kidnapper in Jiading

A 12-year-old boy was kidnapped and murdered last night in suburban Jiading District, police confirmed today.

The police said they have detained the suspect, surnamed Liang, who demanded a 50,000-yuan ransom from the boy's family (US$8,029) and killed the boy before the family was able to respond.

The kidnap happened around 6:40pm yesterday when the boy surnamed Shen left home to buy something in a grocery shop in his neighborhood in Jiangqiao Town but didn't return, the district police said on their official Weibo microblog.

Shen's parents later found a note placed under a plastic bottle on an air conditioner unit outside of their house. It said the boy had been taken away and they should pay 50,000 yuan in cash before midnight.

The frightened parents started to look around for their boy and found him drowning in a ditch about 30 meters away from home, police said.

The boy was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead there.

Police launched a sweeping manhunt in the area and caught Liang, a 28-year-old man, under a bridge on Xiangjiang Highway at about 10pm.

Police said Liang had a criminal record, didn't know Shen's parents and has confessed to his crime.
