Five Chinese are listed in the 100 Top Global Thinkers 2012 presented by the Foreign Policy Monday, with some experts saying that more than anything the selection reflects US values.
The five Chinese are Chen Guangcheng, Ai Weiwei, Yu Jianrong, Ma Jun and Wang Jisi.
Chen Guangcheng leads Chinese names and is ranked ninth overall for his vision of a China led by the rule of law.
The blind lawyer was imprisoned for four years and then placed under house arrest for challenging family planning officials in local Shandong Province.
He fled his house detention and took refuge in the US embassy in Beijing in April and then went to study in the US.
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was released in July 2011 after three months of detention and was later charged with tax-evasion. In April, he set up cameras throughout his house. Yu Jianrong, an expert of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, made the list for daring to be specific about how to change China, the magazine said.
