The State Council's production safety committee over the weekend raised standards on coal mines that are reopened after their production was suspended in the wake of a deadly coal mine accident in Guizhou Province.
According to the committee, some mines that were ordered to suspend production due to safety problems illegally resumed production without fully resolving the safety issues.
Mines that fail to meet safety standards should not be reopened and those that abuse their power and attempt to lower overhaul requirements will be punished.
On Saturday a gas and coal explosion at the Xiangshui Coal Mine in Panxian county of the province's coal-rich city of Liupanshui killed 22 miners, injured five. One miner remained trapped as of Sunday evening.
Eight people were killed in a road accident Sunday morning in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, local traffic police said.
The accident occurred at about 10:35 am on a highway in Huangdi township when a heavy truck collided with an SUV and another truck.
The driver of the SUV and three passengers died on the spot, three others in the SUV and the driver of the truck were seriously injured and later died in hospital.
The driver of the heavy truck has been detained.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
