Huairou court handed down a suspended three-year prison sentence to a 50-year-old woman who embezzled over 220,000 yuan from her company starting in 2009 to feed stray animals, reported the Legal Mirror Tuesday.
The woman, surnamed Guan, began caring for stray dogs and cats in 2000, which cost her at least 7,000 yuan a month.
About 5,000 people who learnt of Guan's story raised 220,000 yuan in October to refund the company in return for a lighter sentence.
