MND spokesman meets press

BEIJING, July 26 (ChinaMil) -- During the regular press conference held by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing on July 25, Sen. Col. Geng Yansheng, spokesman of the MND, answered reporters' questions about the issues widely concerned, such as the earthquake relief by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Chinese People's Armed Police Force (APF), summer-and-autumn conscription, the China-Russia joint anti-terrorism military exercise, the going abroad of the "August 1st" Aerobatic Demonstration Team, and so on.

Troops have transferred 7,500-plus and treated over 2,840 wounded in earthquake relief

According to Geng Yansheng, after the 6.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the counties of Min and Zhang in the northwest China's Gansu province on July 22, the PLA and the APF quickly launched the emergency response mechanism and urgently dispatched 3,993 people, 539 units of various types of equipment, 1 transport aircraft, 1 aerial survey aircraft, 3 helicopters and 1,751 militiamen and reservists to rescue people's life.

As of 20:00 on July 24, the relief troops have rescued 30 people, transferred 7,500-plus and treated over 2,840 injured people, transported 420-odd tons of food and materials, cleaned up 2,570-odd collapsed houses, reopened roads for 93 km, delivered 6,200-plus relief tents, set up 2,000-plus tents, and decontaminated an area of 32,000 square meters for epidemic prevention.

For the next step, the relief troops will continue to treat the wounded, relocate quake victims, defuse dangers, carry out epidemic prevention such as decontamination and disinfection, and so forth.
