Xu Qiliang first extended his welcome to the U.S. guests who came to China to participate in the exchange activities between the Chinese and U.S. retired senior generals. He said that China-U.S. relations currently maintain stable development on the whole. Healthy development of the bilateral relations is a blessing for the people of the two countries and the people of the world at large. The two sides unanimously agreed to further promote China-U.S. cooperative partnership and explore the establishment of a new-type relationship between the two powers.
Xu Qiliang said that the relations between the two militaries are an important component of the relations between the two countries. Maintaining healthy and stable development of the relations between the two militaries helps to enhance China-U.S. strategic mutual trust, safeguard China-U.S. common security interests, manage and control crises and prevent risks.
Xu Qiliang noted that the Chinese side attaches great importance to developing the relations between the two militaries and has made unremitting efforts for it. He hoped that the U.S. retired senior generals would continue playing their positive role and make more contributions to promoting the development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.
William Owens, head of the U.S. delegation and former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the U.S. Armed Forces, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese side for organizing the exchange activities. He expressed that strengthened exchanges made the U.S. side further aware of the necessity and urgency to push forward the pragmatic exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries.
