Some of the big department stores in the city have been found selling substandard clothing with excessive formaldehyde, fiber content problem and a high pH index - all of which pose safety risks - during bargain sales at their outlets, the city's market watchdog said yesterday.
The Shanghai Landmark, Cloud Nine, Wing On and Shanghai No. 1 department stores were some of the shopping malls which were found selling clothes and quilts with quality problems during big sales promotions, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said yesterday.
A batch of Royal Piecadn trousers sold at the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store failed quality tests for the level of formaldehyde, poor color fastness to water and sweat stains, a high pH index and cheating in its fiber content, the bureau said.
The formaldehyde content in it reached 558 milligrams per kilogram, about eight times China's national limit of 75 milligrams per kilogram.
Doctors say excessive formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema, scytitis and even malignant tumors and leukemia.
Dye in clothing with poor color fastness can bleed onto the skin, which can be harmful, while a high pH index can lead to skin allergies and make people vulnerable to bacteria.
A batch of Victory Polo shirts sold at the Shanghai Landmark Department Store were found to contain less fibers than was what was listed on the label.
