Face2Face: Portraits and Interiors, Chinese Dutch Painting Exhibition @ Today Art Museum
The face: is there a more intriguing subject for an artist to paint? In Face2Face, curator Cees Hendrikse delves into the world of portraiture and interior works through four Chinese and Dutch artists. These four painters - Chen Danqing, Jan Worst, Mao Yan and Philip Akkerman - offer the audience a modern take on the age-old tradition. Many pieces feature the alluring and sometimes unnerving eye contact between subject and viewer that helped make Mona Lisa such a captivating painting for centuries. But Mao Yan's Small Portrait of Thomas White Eye No. 1 is more like the anti-Lisa, showing a face in a ghastly white pallette with eyes shut and mouth agape.
