Three European opera stars joined Chinese singers over the weekend to perform Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Traviata" with the Shanghai Oriental Symphony Orchestra. It was the first in this year's series of performances celebrating the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth.
Singing the opera's three lead roles were Spanish soprano Mariola Cantarero, Georgian tenor Shalva Mukeria and Italian baritone Simone Piazzola. It's their first time performing in Shanghai, and Cantolero says she and the others worked well together.
Mariola Cantarero, Spanish Soprano, said, "Very well, because we are young. We want to make a big career. We are very happy to work together."
The show at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center included all three acts of the opera, but it was presented more like a concert, without stage settings or chorus. The conductor says "La Traviata" is an opera that can attract a larger audience, although it's very difficult for the singers.
