DAMASCUS, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian government welcomed Thursday the ouster of Egypt's deposed president Mohamed Morsi, saying that Egyptians should "defend this victory."

"Egypt witnessed last night a deep historic turnabout that mirrors the awareness of our Egyptian people who cling to their Arabism and reject foreign intervention in their national issues," the government said in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency.

Protesters have been massing up at Tahrir Square in downtown Egyptian capital of Cairo and elsewhere since June 30, demanding the end of Morsi's rule.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian army stripped Morsi of his authority and decided to task the head of Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court to run the country for a transitional period.

"The downfall of the Muslim Brotherhood's model reaffirmed the inability of the political Islam to lead a state and protect the cultural diversity," the Syrian statement said.

"Syria's people, army and leadership extend their sincere congratulations, blessing and appreciation to the Egyptian people, " the statement said, urging the Egyptians to hold fast to "this victory" and protect it.

Last month, Morsi announced cutting ties with Syria, warning Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah against continuous involvement in the conflict in Syria.
