ISLAMABAD, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai Thursday telephoned Nawaz Sharif and congratulated him on assuming the office of Pakistan prime minister and invited him to visit Afghanistan, the PM office said.
Relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan are currently tense over cross-border attacks and Kabul's claim that Pakistani forces have constructed check posts on the Afghan side of the border.
Afghan officials have placed hopes on the new Pakistani government to play its role in the elusive peace and reconciliation process.
"Mr. Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan telephoned Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and felicitated him on his assumption of the office of the prime minister of Pakistan, this morning," the PM office said.
During their phone conversation, Hamid Karzai extended his best wishes and expressed the hope that both the brotherly countries will continue to work for further improvement of the bilateral relations which would augur well for peace and stability in the region.
Hamid Karzai also extended invitation to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to visit Afghanistan.
The prime minister accepted the invitation and thanked Karzai for inviting him. The prime minister said that he is looking forward to visiting Afghanistan, the PM office said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also congratulated Prime Minister Sharif and the people of Pakistan on the successful completion of general elections in Pakistan and victory of PML(N), the Foreign Ministry said.
In his message, President Ahmadinejad expressed confidence that relations between the two brotherly countries would flourish under the leadership of Prime Minister Sharif.
In a separate message, the Speaker of the Iran's Consultative Assembly Ali Larijani, also congratulated the prime minister, the Foreign Ministry said.
