Karzai condemns suicide attacks on governor's compound

KABUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai in a statement released by his office hours after the suicide attacks on Parwan governor's compound put the attack on the enemies of Afghanistan and strongly condemned it as a coward act of terrorism.

In a brazen attack, six suicide bombers targeted the fortified Governor Office in Parwan's provincial capital Charikar 55 km north of Afghan capital Kabul at 11:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, leaving 25 people including the attackers dead, according to a statement of Interior Ministry.

"In the multiple suicide bombings and attacks that targeted the office of Parwan's governor in Charikar city at 11:30 a.m. local time, 25 people including six suicide bombers had been killed," the statement of Interior Ministry released here said.

Fourteen civilian employees of the governor's office and five policemen lost their lives, it said.

Thirty-seven people including 34 civilian staff of the governor 's office and three police were injured in the incident, it added.

One of the suicide bombers riding an explosive-laden car blew himself up at the entrance of the governor's office enabling five comrades to enter the compound, the statement said, adding two more suicide bombers blew themselves up inside the compound, while three others were gunned down by police during the firefight.

Parwan's provincial governor Abdul Basir Salangi survived the attack, according to Tolo television.

This is the second attack on Salangi after a suicide bombing next to his office on June 21. In the previous attack, also in the shape of suicide bombing conducted next to his office for which Taliban outfit claimed responsibility, Salangi escaped unhurt but two people including a policeman were killed.

The enemies of peace and enemies of Afghanistan is the term used by Afghan officials for Taliban militants but the outfit that had claimed responsibility for previous attacks against Basir Salangi has yet to make comment on today's attacks.
