A power outage struck large parts of downtown Shanghai Wednesday night.
Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said on its microblog at 9:06 pm that operation was suspended at stations between Zhongshan Park and Nanjing Road East along Line 2 due to power fluctuations.
The Shanghai Municipal Information Office's microblog said that the affected areas included parts of Jing'an, Huangpu and Putuo districts.
Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company said on its microblog at 9:34 pm that the blackout started at 8:10 pm and affected part of metro Line 2.
Power was restored to the areas affected by the blackout by 9:48 pm, according to the power company.
The utility did not disclose the cause of the blackout.
A subway staffer at Jiangsu Road Station on Line 2 told the Global Times that the lights stayed on inside the trains during the blackout, though the station, including the platform, was only illuminated by emergency power.
Subway passengers remained calm and behaved in an orderly fashion during the outage.
At Guanglan Road Station on Line 2, which was outside the affected area, passengers filled the entire platform waiting for service to resume. Station staff eventually told waiting passengers to find another way home, Zeng Yuanshan, a local resident told the Global Times.
Subway service resumed around 9:39 pm, according to the metro operator.
In the microblogosphere, multiple reports surfaced about residents trapped in elevators. At least 50 fire engines were dispatched to rescue people trapped in elevators, according to Shanghai Television Station.
Major shopping malls like New World Department Store and Yaxin Square were also affected.
