2 gunmen killed in clash with Lebanese army

BEIRUT, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Two gunmen were killed while clashing with soldiers at an army checkpoint in a Lebanese border town in the northeast, a military statement said Thursday.

A group of armed men riding a pickup truck attacked the checkpoint and clashed with the soldiers guarding it on the outskirts of the flashpoint town of Arsal, the statement said.

Two of the assailants, a Lebanese and a Syrian, were killed while the rest fled the scene, it said, adding the soldiers were able to seize the truck along with the weapons that the gunmen were trying to transport.

On Thursday, another group of gunmen attacked the same the checkpoint at 2:30 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) without causing any casualties, the military said.
