BAGHDAD, May 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 35 people were killed and 134 others wounded in violent attacks across Iraq on Wednesday, including a wave of car bombings against the capital of Baghdad, Interior Ministry and police sources said.

A total of 23 people were killed and 110 others wounded as nine car bombs struck Baghdad on Wednesday evening, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Three car bombings hit the district of Sadr City in northeastern Baghdad, killing seven people and injuring 33 others, he said.

A car bomb exploded in the Kadhimiya district, north of Baghdad, killing two people and injuring nine others, the source said.

Another bombing in the New Baghdad district in southeastern Baghdad killed one person and wounded 10, while the car bombing in the Al Meshtel district in southeastern Baghdad led to one dead and 13 injured, he said.

Car bombings also hit the districts of Zaafraniyah, Seydia and Huseiniya in the capital, killing 12 people and wounding 45 others altogether, the source said.

Earlier in the day, 12 people were killed and 24 wounded in separate bomb attacks, including two car bombings, the police said.

The deadliest attack occurred in the city of Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad, when two car bombs detonated coordinately in the southwestern part of the city, killing 10 people and wounding 13 others, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate attack, a roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol in a village near Kirkuk, damaging a police vehicle and wounding two policemen aboard, the source said.

Elsewhere, a suicide bomber on a booby-trapped motorcycle attacked a police patrol in the town of Tarmiyah, some 40 km north of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding four others, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.

In eastern province of Diyala, a magnetic bomb attached to a civilian car went off in western the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, killing an old man and wounding his grandson, a provincial police source said.

Also in the province, four people were wounded when an explosive-laden motorcycle detonated in a residential area in the city of Maqdadiyah, some 40 km northeast of Baquba, the source added.

Violence is still common in Iraq despite the dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
