Fresh mortar attack injures 7 in Syrian capital

08:33, April 02, 2013

DAMASCUS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Multiple mortar shells struck a suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus Monday, injuring seven people and causing material damages, as a roadside bomb tore through a car inside the capital and injured the driver, the country's state media said.

The mortars, fired by rebel groups, landed at the Ush al-Warwar suburb of Damascus, the report said, adding that at least seven people were injured.

The suburb is dominated by members of the Alawit minority, to which the ruling elite in Syria belongs.

Earlier in the day, a bomb attached to a car went off in the Damascus' district of Burnieh, injuring the driver and causing material losses, the state-run SANA news agency said.

Mortar shells have increasingly hit government institutions, schools and residential buildings alike, terrifying people and killing many, while forcing most of Damascenes to stay indoors.
