CAIRO, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi met Monday with the UN-AL joint special representative to Syria Lakhadr Brahimi in Cairo to discuss the latest developments in Syria.
During their meeting, al-Arabi would brief Brahimi about Egyptian foreign minister's decision issued on March 6, calling on the Syrian opposition coalition to form an executive committee to occupy the Syrian seat in the AL; while Brahimi would brief al- Arabi the results of his recent meetings with senior officials in his latest visits to several countries, sources in the AL told Xinhua.
As for the Syrian representation in the Arab summit slated to be held in Qatar's Doha next week, "This depends on the (Syrian) oppositions' meeting in Turkey's Istanbul and their consensus on forming a government to occupy the seat in the summit," al-Arabi said in a statement.
On Monday, the Syrian National Opposition Coalition held a meeting in Istanbul to name a new government amid Western calls, specially from France and Britain, to arm the Syrian opposition.
