More foreign leaders congratulate Xi on election

BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- More foreign leaders sent congratulatory messages Monday to Xi Jinping on his election as the new Chinese president.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, leaders offering congratulations to Xi on Monday included Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Israeli President Shimon Peres, Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Swiss President Ueli Maurer, Samoan Head of State Tupua Tamasese Efi, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, leader of Japan's New Komeito Party Natsuo Yamaguchi and leader of Japan's Social Democratic Party Mizuho Fukushima.

Xi, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was elected state president and chairman of China's Central Military Commission Thursday at the plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC).

Also on Monday, Maurer, Razak, Fukushima, Uzbek President Islam Karimov, and Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi congratulated Li Keqiang on his endorsement as China's premier Friday at the first session of the NPC.

Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Fukushima also congratulated Zhang Dejiang on his election as chairman of the NPC Standing Committee at Thursday's NPC plenary meeting.

Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea Kang Chang-hee extended congratulations to Yu Zhengsheng on becoming chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top political advisory body, last Monday at the fourth plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee.
