MOSCOW, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) not to attempt to use its resolution on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) as an excuse to use force.
"We are currently working on a UNSC resolution which must be finely calibrated," Lavrov told the audience at the Diplomatic Academy. "First of all, these measures must be targeted precisely at nuclear and missile programs of DPRK, because their development poses danger for international security," he said.
Meanwhile, the minister warned, such a resolution should not contain any loopholes which would allow to be interpreted as a permission to use force and it must only facilitate a diplomatic solution.
"The resolution must clearly confirm there is no alternative to the talks over the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula and to resumption of the six-party process," Lavrov said.
"We don't think it is right to use the current situation as an excuse to beef up military potential in the region by way of massive military drills, expanding missile potential targeting DPRK," the Interfax news agency quoted the minister as saying.
Moscow demands to give Pyongyang security guarantees in exchange for DPRK's consent to resume the talks.
Last week, the UN Security Council strongly condemned the third underground nuclear test conducted by the DPRK, saying the latest move by Pyongyang "is a grave violation" of relevant resolutions of the council.
