Syrian TV shows footage of Israeli airstrike's aftermath

DAMASCUS, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian state-TV has aired video footage of the bombed military site that was targeted last week by an Israeli airstrike near the capital Damascus.

The footage, repeatedly being run on the TV, showed the destroyed building with shattered windows, piles of debris and twisted metal on burnt concrete. Syria said two people were killed in the rare air raid and threatened retaliation in due time.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak confirmed on Sunday that his country carried out the air raid inside Syria. Addressing a world gathering at the Munich conference, Barak said "I can't add anything to what you have read in the newspapers about what happened in Syria several days ago."

"I keep telling frankly that we said- and that's proof when we said something we mean it- we say that we don't think it should be allowed to bring advanced weapons systems into Lebanon," he said.

U.S. officials said the Israeli airstrike targeted a convoy carrying anti-aircraft weapons and heading form Syria to Lebanon and also targeted the centre out of which the convoy set off.

The convoy, Western officials said, was carrying weapons to Lebanese Hezbollah militant group.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Sunday that his country is capable of repulsing any aggression that might target its people thanks to its military strength and the awareness of its people, according to the state-media.
