UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan said here Monday that 132 of its military and police have been killed in UN peacekeeping operations across the world over the past five decades, making it one of the countries with the highest number of fatalities suffered by member states in serving the world body.
The statement came as Pakistani Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani was addressing an open meeting of the UN Security Council on the UN peacekeeping operations. Pakistan holds the rotating Security Council presidency for January.
United Nations peacekeeping operations are a vital instrument employed by the international community to advance peace and security. The role of the UN in peacekeeping was recognized in 1988, when the United Nations peacekeeping forces received the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Pakistan's peacekeeping role is rooted in our abiding faith in the purposes and principles of the UN Charter," said Jilani. " Participation in UN peacekeeping is underpinned by a national consensus and is an integral part of our foreign policy."
According to Jilani, Pakistan has contributed more than 144,711 troops to 41 UN peacekeeping missions in 23 countries in more than five decades.
