Revealing the mystery of the ancient capital

The national archaeological site of ancient Luoyang city, is located across both urban and suburban areas of Luoyang, which is south of Longmen, in the province of Henan. The ancient capital crosses the Luo River, at a georgaphical location that is in many ways ideal, yet also dangerous.

Luoyang city was first built in 605 during the Sui Dynasty, as the country's eastern capital. During the Tang Dynasties, Emperor Tai Zong took it as his palatial site while visiting the east, building the Luoyang Palace which he also repaired twice. Afterwards, when Emperor Gao Zong took the throne, he kept Luoyang Palace as the eastern capital. Next, Empress Wu Zetian changed the city's title from eastern capital to divine capital; when Emperor Zhong Zong ascended to rule, he returned the title of eastern capita to Luoyang, which it kept for 13 dynasties, during the peak of ancient China.

After half a century of investigation, the mysterious relics of the ancient city was revealed to the public: the City Luoyang of Sui and Tang Dynasties consisted of the outer city, imperial city and palace, east city and Shangyang Palace, and covered 47 square kilometers.

Witness the most glorious history in ancient China

The story of Luoyang city of the Sui and Tang Dynasties feels like a historic drama, including numerous historic figures in a grand epic.

Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty declared war against Korea, dredging the Grand Canal. As the territory of the Tang Dynasty expanded to become even larger than that of the Han Dynasty, the strongest country in the world was established, under Empress Wu Zetian's rule. The Kaiyuan flourishing age was then created by Emperor Xuangzong; during this time the imperial examination was developed leaving behind a lasting influence in China, as it continued to be practiced for up to 1300 years. The poetic masterpieces left by Li Bai and Bai Juyi, were also related to Luoyang city to some extent.
