There is a river running across Dongchuan district of Yunnan province. Villagers living on the bank call it the "milky river". The tailing water from the local mine industries is discharged directly into the river, turning the water into milky white. The irrigation and drinking water of the villagers nearby have been severely affected.

The pollution has lasted for several years. Due to scare rainfall in recent years, the milky water in the river has become the only choice of drinking water for the villagers.
