Liu has been a yoga practitioner for many years on top of attending teacher-oriented training. She has studied yoga, chanting and meditation in India, but upon returning to Beijing, she realized that much of what she learned was inappropriate to teach in the Chinese capital.
"In this area, not so many people want to be professional yogis," she said. "They just want to exercise. It's rich people who want to relax."
Liu also notes that many people take up yoga specifically to shed a few pounds, so the smaller hot yoga studio is particularly popular with the weight-loss crowd. But she said she tends not to push to the extreme temperatures that hot yoga is known for.
