Joint training is 'fairly skillful'
As early as five or six years ago, command posts for the aviation force of the air force and even for the second artillery force existed in the PLA's military exercises at division and brigade levels.
In fact, reserving these posts is to cultivate a kind of "sense". It is not easy to launch cross-service and cross-arm joint operations without pre-communication and engagement.
In 2012, a lot of "joint" training activities were organized within the systems of various military area commands (MAC) and various services and arms of the PLA, as evidenced by many exercises including the mutual coordination drills among the arms of the PLA ground force such as the mechanized infantry, artillery, armored, engineering and army aviation troop units; the long-distance raid and confrontation drill among various types and models of aircraft of the PLA Air Force such as the fighter, bomber, aerial refueling tanker and airborne early-warning aircraft; the beachhead landing and the island landing drill among various arms of the PLA Navy such as landing ships, surface combat ships, submarines and marine corps.
These "joint" and coordinated training activities within their respective systems are optimistically regarded by many experts as the separated sub-operations of the major joint operation. The various services and arms of the PLA have achieved their respective skillful coordination in the drills under information-based conditions.
In 2012, the sense of joint operation was already actively explored and applied in the troop units at various levels without much cultivation and education. Multiple combat forces of the PLA Navy and PLA Air Force participated in the division and brigade-level exercises organized by the Guangzhou MAC and the Nanjing MAC of the PLA, not only forming some basic experience of joint operation, but also initiating the thinking and discussion on new combat methods.
