Based on a true story, Beijing Blues follows middle-aged, diabetic detective Zhang Huiling as he fights crime while zipping around Beijing atop his scooter. Director Gao Qunshu puts authenticity above all else in this film, and it comes through in the way street crime is portrayed as an act of survival, not just calculated misdeeds. It's that dedication that helped Gao earn a nod as the best director at the 2012 Shanghai International Film Festival.
