Chinese-born artist Cai Guoqiang was one of five contemporary artists recently honored in Washington DC by the US State Department. He received its "Medal of Arts" award. He is well known for his so-called "explosion projects" which are a combination of fireworks, artistery and optical illusion in four dimensions. Through a translator, we spoke with Cai Guoqiang about his work.
Cai Guoqiang said, "Gunpowder is my signature medium because in the past, I’ve made explosion events, even at the Beijing Olympics and many people know about this."
What’s shown now is an example of one of his explosion events that was featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The "explosion projects,” have been featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, and Central Park in New York City.
