Bank sues customer over shady charges (2)

In court, the bank asserted that the defendant was liable for the charges because he didn't report them to the bank fast enough. With late fines and interest, the bank said Lu owed it a total of 6,517 yuan. In response, Lu offered to repay half of the amount.

The court did not reach a decision Thursday. Instead, it asked the parties to try to negotiate a settlement.

Many banks cover their customers' losses for fraudulent credit card charges, provided that the customers report the charges within a specific time period. China Construction Bank will compensate customers as long as they report the charges, according to the bank's customer service hotline.

If customers report fraudulent charges with 48 hours, China Merchants Bank will cover up to 15,000 yuan a year for cards that are not password protected.
