Sales of novel child care products are surging in China, and young parents are significant contributors to this growing market, indicated a consumption report recently released by T-Mall, an online shopping site under Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Different from older parents, young Chinese moms and dads show big love for products such as electric baby rockers and smart child-care robots.

The report indicated a 61-percent compound growth in consumption of child care products by parents born after 1995.

A Guangdong-based company sold 120,000 automatic thermostatic milk bottles on T-Mall in just a couple of months. Sales were achieved without any promotion, said Tang Qing, branding director of the company.

In 2018, the sales volume of smart robots on T-Mall grew by 395 percent, and sales of programming toys for children also rose by 570 percent, the report said.

Young parents also love to dress their children up in trendy outfits. The report showed that nearly 20 million people bought Peppa Pig clothing over the last year, and shoes and clothes themed around Hello Kitty, Disney, and Transformers also enjoyed immense popularity.

Lang Guobiao, deputy secretary-general of the China Maternal and Infant Industry Innovation Alliance, noted that the post-90s generation is the pickiest consumer group, and their demand for child care products is far from satisfied. He also said that parental roles are shifting in the younger generations.

“We are now seeing more young fathers join their other halves in child education, which is in huge contrast with those born in the 1980s,” Lang said.

Statistics indicated that half of China's childcare consumption came from fathers.
