Phone makers see golden opportunity after Olympic darling Fu Yuanhui loses her cellphone
For most people, after losing a cellphone, the next logical step is to save up and buy a new one. But this is apparently not the case for the Olympic bronze medalist Fu Yuanhui, who has become an overnight celebrity since the start of the Olympics, adored for her affable honesty and vivid facial expressions.
After Fu lost her cellphone in the Olympic Village last week, she was quickly bombarded with offers for new phones from Samsung, Chinese phone maker ZUK Mobile and Chinese online retailer Suning, all of who offered to give her the newest, latest model for free.
Samsung offered the athlete a Note 7, which was released earlier this month. The offer came in the form of a Weibo post responding to another post by Fu's father, in which he complained about his daughter’s cellphone quandary.
“What a terrific chance for an advertisement. By the way, I lost my charging cable--can I get one for free, too?” Weibo user Bulunmixian asked sarcastically.
