Women's table tennis team unsure about fashionable yet 'windy' uniforms
China's table tennis dream team delivered at the Rio Games on Friday, Aug. 12, after the women's team bounced past Brazil with an easy 3:0 win. Yet it was the team's uniform--a pink, one-piece dress--that grabbed the attention of most viewers.
"It looks like Ding Ning is wearing pajamas," wrote Weibo user, Tiancai Shaonv Hangouzi.
"It shows the taste of a straight man," Fairy loves mango wrote.
“Although many people have poked fun at the dress, I actually enjoy seeing the athletes jumping around and moving in the brightly-colored dress. It is a relaxing game to watch,” Chengjinhua wrote in support of the uniforms.
Ding Ning, who already won the singles event and participated in Friday’s game, showed her humorous side in an interview, stating that the team “had been so stressed” before the competition even started, all because of the dresses.
"We never wore them during training, but since the dress is a new design, our coach [Kong Linghui] wanted us to wear them during the match," said Liu Shiwen, national team member and current number one player in the world, according to the ranking from the International Table Tennis Federation.
"I could feel a breeze, which was a little too much," Ding said of the dresses this year.
Kong, a former Olympic champion and head coach of the women's national team, said that he felt the dresses were "pretty good-looking."
"The match with Brazil was going to be easy, so it was a chance for us to introduce the dress," Kong said.
The team has worn different dresses every year since Kong became head coach four years ago, chinanews.com reported. In a column for Table Tennis World magazine in 2014, Kong said he always pushes the "girls" on his team to be more fashionable, such as encouraging them to dye their hair. "I want to give fans a new impression of the women's table tennis team," Kong said.
