The customs department of the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao recently confiscated 7,640 grams of gold artifacts carried by a Chinese traveler who failed to properly declare them. The 16-piece set of artifacts is worth more than 2.63 million yuan (around $400,000). According to the regulations of China's General Administration of Customs, gold is a nationally restricted item for import and export. Before passing through customs, any traveler carrying over 50 grams of gold must make a written declaration to customs officials. Beyond this quantity, which is the limit set for "personal use," one must claim the gold an import or export.
