China Nuclear Engineering Group Corporation (CNEC) has signed a cooperation agreement with an Indonesian nuclear enterprise to promote the 4th generation of High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors (HTGR) on Monday, according to the official website of CNEC.
Wang Shoujun, chairman of CNEC, signed the agreement on Aug. 1 with Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto, chairman of Indonesia's National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN), to jointly develop HTGRs and train professionals. The agreement was signed during the second official Meeting of Cultural and People-to-People Exchange between China and Indonesia.
In order to better understand the Indonesian market, Wang visited BATAN in June, at which point the two parties reached a consensus about the issue.
To meet increasing demands for electricity, Indonesia aims to construct large light water reactors in populated areas including Java, Bali, Madura Island and Sumatra, and to construct small HTGRs on Kalimantan and Sulawesi starting from 2027. Before the commercial-use reactors, Indonesia plans to construct HTGRs for experimental use. The first HTGR is scheduled to start construction in 2017
Besides Indonesia, CNEC has entered negotiations with various countries and regions including Pakistan, Djibouti, Brazil, Saudi Arab and ASEAN countries to promote HTGR. Wang said that the global spread of HTGR shows CNEC's ambition to become an owner of nuclear power rather than just a builder of nuclear power stations.
