Management on radiation sources
China encourages the application of radioactive sources in civil areas as long as stringentmanagement and safety measures are maintained. In order to do so, the government will upgrade the safety level for domestic sources and storage of radiation wastes, as well as launch cooperation with the US.
Combating the illegal trafficking of nuclear materials
China deems the fight against the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials a crucial part of nuclear terrorism prevention. With great emphasis on the control of nuclear proliferation, China has signed agreements with the US and other countries to conduct cooperation in customs inspection of radiation materials.
For example, atraining center on radiation detection was set up in the port of Qinhuangdao in North China’s Hebei Province to boost the nation’s capability to fight against the smuggling of nuclear materials. A pilot program in Shanghai’s Yangshan port was also launched by China and the US to curb the illegal transport of nuclear and other radioactive materials.
