Commentary: China plays indispensable role in Iranian nuclear issue

Implementation of a comprehensive agreement on Iranian nuclear issues is finally around the corner. As an important figure in the negotiations, China has played an indispensable role in this resolution.

After intense preparations, formal implementation of the deal will mark a new beginning. A remarkable achievement of global security in 2015, the deal will effectively ease the whirling tension in the Middle East and lower the potential for conflict in the region.

For Iran, there will be more room for bilateral and multilateral cooperation when sanctions are lifted. The quality of life of the Iranian people will be improved significantly and Iran’s foreign ties will turn a new page.

Considering the current global security arena, the agreement will also consolidate the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Moreover, the deal sets a precedent for the global community to resolve major disputes and issues through diplomacy.

During the negotiation process, China’s proactive efforts and mediation have demonstrated the manner and style of diplomacy that a major power should possess in the new era.

The negotiations have been difficult at times. However, at every important juncture, China reiterated political goals and urged an end to violence and unilateral sanctions.

To fairly resolve the issue, China offered a host of ideas, many of which are present in the final agreement.

When and U.S. and Iran hit an impasse on issues such as enriched uranium and sanction relief, China stepped up to guide the negotiation though constructive proposals. These efforts were appreciated by the involved parties.

In the course of negotiations, modification of the Arak heavy water reactor was an especially complex issue. With its unique technical advantage, China came up with the solution that eventually resolved this divisive issue.

If China didn’t take the lead with the U.S. on the modification project, implementation might be delayed even further.

As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, China always sticks to the truth during negotiations for the sake of global security.

At present, the U.S. and Iran remain challenged by a mutual lack of trust. Europe and the U.S. are also somewhat hostile toward Russia.

Given this political context, China has an edge as an objective mediator.

The new agreement is a delicate balance of interests. Its implementation will inevitably encounter numerous obstacles. Even apart from the 36-year-long discord between the U.S. and Iran, the intricate Middle East situation can be unpredictable enough on its own.

The follow-up of the deal, therefore, still requires relevant countries to undertake their political responsibilities and display diplomatic wisdom.
