With the release of a new 100-yuan banknote in 2015, old banknotes will gradually be withdrawn from circulation. What will happen to the damaged banknotes withdrawn from commercial banks? At a mysterious place one cannot find on the map of Chengdu, tons of banknotes are destroyed every day. The destroyed banknotes will be transported to paper mills as material for pulp, or burnt for power generation, or used as baking fuels.
The banknote processing center in Chengdu was moved to a new address this April. For the first time, this mysterious place opened to media last week. There, journalists witnessed the last leg of the banknotes’ trip.
