Song Xiuying, 96 years old, is called the Grandma of Pickles. She sells pickles in the market of agricultural products in Ankang road, Zhengzhou in Central China Henan Province. Grandma’s husband passed away in her early years, and she managed to raise 7 children via selling pickles. Now, she has many children and grandchildren, but she still sells pickles in the market and does well with weighting and accounting.
In Baishun, the market of agricultural products, the grandma of pickles is wearing a colourful short-sleeved shirt and dark red shorts, with a purse on her neck. The grandma is amiable, unreservedly sharing her pickles-making methods with the consumers. Two years ago, grandma even claimed to start a business and was eager to sell the pickles overseas.
Grandma Song’s house is clean and tidy, with pickles developed and researched by her placing everywhere in the next room. Grandma Song says: “My children have long insisted in me stopping selling pickles; however, it’s a waste of time staying at home. What’s more, selling pickles is a kind of an exercise and also a way of having fun in my life.”
The eldest son of Grandma Song, Mr. Yan, is 72 years old. He says: “My father passed away so early that my mother herself brought seven children up by selling pickles. Now, all seven children can support her, but she is unwilling to bear the boredom and persists in looking for a house for setting up a company and conducting pickles business.”
The eldest daughter of Grandma Song says: “Several years ago, our eldest brother suggested that he would give 20000 Yuan to my mother to have her stay at home, but she refused. It brings about happiness to her when making and selling pickles. I’m happy if my mother is happy. We should obey her.” Good health and a light heart maybe the longevity secret of this grandma.
