The Affiliated Hospital of China's Military Medical Sciences Academy on July 15 announced that after 16 months of postoperative observation, the world's first combined transplantation of placenta stem cells and umbilical cord blood stem cells for treating leukemia performed by the hospital has succeeded.
Hu Jiangwei, the attending physician, introduced that the patient is a 9-year-old girl with leukemia. In March 2014, the hospital performed the transplantation with stem cells derived from her new-born sister’s placenta and umbilical cord. Currently, the patient's normal hematopoietic function has resumed and she is in good condition.
