BEIJING, Sept. 22 -- Top Chinese political advisor Yu Zhengsheng on Monday urged his fellows to study President Xi Jinping's speech on China's brand of "socialist consultative democracy" while vowing to improve the system.
Yu made the remarks at a symposium celebrating the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
According to Xi's speech, which was delivered on Sunday, consultative democracy helps Chinese people take part in the country's governance and makes sure that diverse voices can be heard, ensuring that consensus can be reached and that the demands of different interest groups can be incorporated into decisions smoothly.
Socialist consultative democracy is not only a unique embodiment and advantage of democracy with Chinese characteristics, but also a reflection of the "mass line" of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the political realm, said Yu. The "mass line" of the CPC is introduced to strengthen ties with the people.
He stressed that the leadership of the CPC must be upheld and strengthened in consultative democracy.
"We must understand that the CPPCC is not an organ of power but a platform to promote democracy, improve political consultation and unite all walks of life," said Yu, adding that consultation with political advisors can help enhance the process of decision-making.
He also urged political advisors to submit better and targeted proposals.
