Cross-Straits Efforts to Rescue Mainland Sailors
People on both sides of the Taiwan Straits have succeeded in saving the lives of eight mainland sailors from a ship which capsized near Jinmen (Quemoy) Island Tuesday.
One sailor is still missing. Concerned departments on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan cooperated closely in the rescue efforts.
Owing to a typhoon, a merchant vessel from east China's Fujian Province collided with a rock near Jinmen Tuesday morning. All nine crew members fell into the water.
The officers and men of a mainland frontier unit contacted them by radar and telescopes, and asked a ship from Taiwan for help.
The sailors on board the Taiwan ship braved gigantic waves to rescue the crew. The Jinmen frontier guards also offered a helping hand, and after many hours of rescue work, eight seamen were saved.
