India's Urban Population Up 2.1 Percent in Last Decade

India's urban population grew by 2.1 percent in the past decade from 1991 to 2001, with Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra leading the state in urbanization.

According to actual population records released Friday by the Home Ministry, the total Indian population stood at 1,027 million, of which 742 million lived in rural areas and 285 million in urban areas.

Among the states, Tamil Nadu was the most urbanized state with 43.9 percent of population living in the urban areas followed by Mahrashtra at 42.4 percent and Gujarat at 37.4 percent. Enditem
