Anti-Globalization Protests Staged in Turkey

A group of anti-globalization activists staged a protest in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul on Friday against the Group of Eight summit, which is taking place in Genoa, Italy, the Anatolia News Agency reported.

"The G8 countries are murderers of the climate," chanted more than 20 people, who described themselves as members of the "Anti- Globalization, Social Ecologist Transformation Group."

The protestors walked on the Istiklal Avenue downtown Istanbul and read out a press statement. They threw ice cubes on the ground to draw public attention to global warming.

Some group members were taken into custody by the police.

Meanwhile, some 30 members of the Socialist Power Party also gathered in Istanbul to protest the G8 summit.

The demonstrators, braving police intervention, showed a banner and read out a statement and then dispersed.
