Sri Lanka's Muslims who were staging protest against the alleged killing of two students by police clashed with them in a town in the east of the country on Sunday, local officials said.
They said that police used armored personnel carriers to remove barricades set up by local residents in Kalmunai, about 390 kilometers east of the capital Colombo. No casualties have been reported in the clash.
Shops in the town remain closed for the second consecutive day on Sunday following the killing of two students in a police shooting when a suspected Tamil Tiger rebels shot dead a police constable on Friday.
The separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country for an independent Tamil homeland there. The bloody war has killed more than 64,000 people.
