Earthquake Jolts Indian Capital

An earthquake shook the capital of New Delhi at midmorning Saturday, sending frightened residents fleeing their homes into the streets.

India's meteorological office said it was still trying to assess the quake's magnitude and epicenter.

It was not known immediately whether the quake caused any damage or casualties.

The jolt was felt as far away as Srinagar, capital of Jammu-Kashmir state, about 350 miles north of New Delhi.

A devastating earthquake in the western Gujarat state killed more than 20,000 people in January.
