Death Toll in Indian Quake Reaches 16,487

The death toll of the devastating earthquake which hit Gujarat on January 26 was officially put at 16,487 and the injured at 146,713, Agricultural Secretary Bhaskar Barua said Friday.

He said that nearly 400,000 blankets, over 64,000 tents, 5,000 tons of GI sheets and over 100,000 plastic sheets had been sent to the state. He noted that the Gujarat government had requested for 150,000 tents.

Foodgrains, milk powder, edible oil, kerosene and diesel had been supplied in adequate quantities, he said, adding that kitchen kits had been distributed in Kutch, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Surendernagar districts.

He said that the state government was actively preparing plans for reconstruction and rehabilitation measures.

There has been no outbreak of disease in the quake-hit towns and villages due to extensive steps taken by the authorities, he stressed.
