The unemployment rate was 6.4 percent from December 2000 to February 2001 in Macao special administrative region (SAR), standing at the same level of the period from November last year to January this year.

During the December-February period, Macao had a labor force of 215,000, accounting for 49.7 percent of its total population and including 201,000 employees and 14,000 jobless people, according to a sample survey made by the Statistics and Census Services of the SAR government.

The sectors reporting more employees include gaming, entertainment, hotels, catering, wholesale and retail sales and clothes-making, while the employment situation became worse in the sectors of real estate, renting and construction.

The building and manufacturing industries still experience a shortage of employees over the three-month period, the source said.
